Cant hooks and peaveys are two tools that are used to move, roll, lift, pivot, and position logs with very little difference between them. Both cant hooks and peaveys consist of a handle with a swing hook. The difference between the two is what is on the end of the handle and the way the tools grip a log. A cant hook has a small toe hook on the end which provides a second biting edge, and it certainly helps grip logs that are slippery or difficult. A peavey has a point you can stick in the ground for sliding or leveraging logs. This means peaveys also come in handy when you need visual markers when felling trees. Additionally, you can stick the hook between logs and free them for easier moving or lifting. These tools are often used interchangeably and are capable of doing the same jobs. So it comes down to personal preference when choosing between the two tools.
